Discover the Turtle Flambeau Flowage
The Turtle Flambeau Scenic Wilderness Waters Area and Trude Lake encompass an impressive expanse of nearly 19,000 acres of water and 35,500 acres of public land, ready for you to explore and enjoy all year round. Unlike Canada, no passport is required here. And unlike Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, no permits are necessary.
The Turtle Flambeau Flowage was formed in 1926 with the construction of a dam, creating a vast reservoir. The Turtle Flambeau Dam harnesses the power of the Turtle and Flambeau Rivers, generating energy for the Flambeau Paper Corporation located 20 miles south on the Flambeau River in Park Falls. This remarkable dam has given birth to 19,000 acres of pristine water, boasting 212 miles of winding shoreline. The flowage comprises 16 natural lakes, three rivers, and numerous creeks, all untouched by pollution.
How to Reach Us
The Turtle Flambeau Flowage is conveniently situated between the towns of Mercer, in Iron County, and Park Falls, in Price County. If you’re traveling from Chicago, we are approximately 375 miles away; from Milwaukee, around 300 miles; and from Minneapolis, approximately 275 miles. Accessing the flowage is easy, whether you choose to take County Highway FF from Mercer via U.S. Highway 51 or County Highway F from Park Falls/Butternut via U.S. Highway 13.
A Nature Lover’s Paradise
In 1992, Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson officially recognized the Turtle Flambeau Flowage as a protected wilderness area, safeguarding its rugged beauty and unspoiled natural character for generations to come. This water wonderland offers an abundance of opportunities for outdoor adventure, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts of all kinds. Ambassadeur Hotel invites you to come and experience the true essence of outdoor living, providing accommodations that cater to every style of “roughing it.”
