Beach family photos can be a source of excitement and stress at the same time. We all want to capture those special moments with our loved ones in a beautiful setting, but deciding what to wear can often be a challenge. Fear not! With my years of experience in capturing beach family photos, I’ve got you covered. In this outfit guide, I’ll inspire you and provide you with some ideas on what to wear for your beach family photoshoot.
Where to Start
When planning your beach family outfits, I recommend starting with one person’s outfit, usually the mom’s. Once you have found the perfect outfit for one family member, you can use it as the foundation to coordinate everyone else’s outfits. Lay the clothes out on the floor and see how they look together. This will give you a better idea of how the outfits will come together when you’re snuggled up for your shoot.
For women, I always love soft, natural fabrics that flow easily in the ocean breeze. These types of fabrics photograph beautifully. Consider wearing a long dress or a flowing blouse that will delicately move during the shoot. This adds texture and brings your photos to life, making you look like a dreamy beach goddess.
When it comes to men’s outfits, my go-to is a button-down shirt paired with rolled-up pants or shorts. This combination creates an effortless and casual look while still appearing put together. Ditch the shoes for a natural beachy vibe. Bare feet always look more natural, while shoes can seem odd and out of place.
Comfort is key when dressing your little ones. They’ll want to play and explore during the photoshoot, so make sure their outfits allow for movement. Avoid awkward outfits that bunch up or look too formal for the beach. Opt for casual summer dresses for your little girls and shorts with a collared shirt for your little guys. Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes and towels for the little ones, as they tend to get wet and sandy during these shoots (which adds to the fun!).
When it comes to colors, sticking to solid tones is always a safe bet. Bold patterns can be distracting in photos, so I recommend soft, muted colors that complement the natural hues of the ocean and sunset. Neutrals like cream, white, light blues and greens, and soft pinks blend effortlessly with the beach’s natural elements, resulting in stunning photographs.
Remember, the key to beach family photos is keeping it simple, light, and relaxed. You’re at the beach, after all, so you want to look natural and comfortable. Leave the business suits at home! By choosing easy, breezy outfits that suit the beach setting, you’ll look perfect for your beach photoshoot.
